One of the most common questions we get at La Mariée — so we finally dedicated an entire blog post to it: when exactly should you start shopping for your wedding dress?
Start 12 months before your wedding date.
Yes, 12 months. It sounds like a lot — but once you understand the full wedding dress shopping timeline, it makes complete sense.
Why Your Wedding Dress Shopping Timeline Starts 12 Months Out
Wedding dresses take 6 to 8 months to order and arrive. Every gown in our boutique is made to order, meaning your designer doesn’t begin creating your dress until your order is placed. It’s part of what makes your gown so special — but it does require patience.
“Okay, but if the dress only takes 6 to 8 months, why do I need 12?” Great question. You’ll need an additional 2 to 3 months for alterations. Hemming, bustling, and fitting a gown to your body takes time — and rushing that process isn’t something we’re willing to do when the result has to be perfect.
That remaining buffer? It’s for the unexpected. Shipping delays happen. Occasionally, a designer catches an issue and needs to correct it before sending your dress. These things are rare, but they’re real — and having that cushion means you’ll never lose sleep over them.

What Happens When You Wait: Rush Fees
Brides who shop late don’t just feel stressed — they pay for it. Rush fees from designers can climb into the thousands, and that’s before factoring in rush alterations, which require your seamstress to work overtime to meet your deadline. Following the recommended wedding dress shopping timeline is one of the simplest ways to protect your budget.
Waiting also limits your options. Some designers don’t offer rush ordering at all, which means certain dresses simply won’t be available the closer you get to your date.

Can You Start Shopping Earlier Than 12 Months?
Absolutely — and we love it when brides do. More time means more options, zero pressure, and a shopping experience you can enjoy from start to finish. If you have the time, there’s no such thing as starting too early.
What If You’re Already Inside 12 Months?
Don’t panic — book your appointment now. Depending on your timeline and the dress you choose, rush fees may be unavoidable, but our team will do everything we can to minimize them. The sooner you come in, the more we can do for you.
